Two Talks on Frantz Fanon - by Peter Hudis

Frantz Fanon

TWO TALKS ON FRANTZ FANON – BY PETER HUDIS

Tuesday 16th February 2016
Frantz Fanon on Race, Recognition, and Revolution: A Re-examination
Cambridge
Cambridge University
Mill Lane Lecture Room, 17:00-18:45:
Organised by the Cambridge Defend Education (CDE) and Cambridgeshire Left
Frantz Fanon (1926-61) is widely considered one of the most important anti-colonial theorists of the twentieth century. Today we are witnessing a resurgence of interest in his contributions to philosophy, psychology and revolutionary theory in light of such realities as persistent racial discrimination in the West, the rise of religious fundamentalism, and the social crises enveloping much of the developing world. This talk will re-examine Fanon’s contributions to ongoing debates over race, racism, and recognition in light of the intellectual sources that motivated much of his work—especially Marxist theory and Hegelian philosophy.
Peter Hudis is author of Frantz Fanon: Philosopher of the Barricades (Pluto Press, 2015) and Marx’s Concept of the Alternative to Capitalism (Brill, 2012). He has edited or co-edited numerous works, including The Power of Negativity: Selected Writings on the Dialectic of Hegel and Marx, by Raya Dunayevskaya (Lexington, 1992) and The Rosa Luxemburg Reader (Monthly Review Books, 2006). He is currently general editor of The Complete Works of Rosa Luxemburg, which will make all of her work available in 14 volumes (3 volumes have appeared so far). He is Professor of Philosophy and Humanities at Oakton Community College in the U.S.

Marxism and Ecology

Kevin Anderson

MARXISM AND ECOLOGY

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2014

6:30-8:30 PM
Westside Peace Center
3916 Sepulveda Blvd., near Venice Blvd. (free parking in rear)
Suite 101-102, press #22 at door to get into building
Culver City (LA area)

SPEAKERS:
Kevin Anderson, author of Marx at the Margins
Cristina A., youth activist and participant in NY climate march
Lisa Lubow, historian and activist

At an objective level, the ecological crisis has reached new heights of urgency, while at a subjective level, a massive movement against climate change and fossil fuels has formed, as seen most recently in the 400,000+ march in New York.  Within this movement, including in LA, a strong “system change” tendency, which puts the question of capitalism itself on the agenda, has emerged.  The speakers will respond to this new situation by considering Marxism and ecology both in theory and in practice.

Transcending Capitalism, in Theory and in Practice

TRANSCENDING CAPITALISM, IN THEORY AND IN PRACTICE

SUNDAY, MARCH 16, 2014
6:00-8:00 PM
Westside Peace Center
3916 Sepulveda Blvd., near Venice Blvd. (free parking in rear)
Suite 101-102, press #22 at door to get into building
Culver City (LA area)

Speaker:
PETER HUDIS, author of MARX’S CONCEPT OF THE ALTERNATIVE TO CAPITALISM
Commentator:
SARAH MASON, former Occupy LA activist

In contrast to the traditional view that Marx’s work is restricted to a critique of capitalism and does not contain a detailed or coherent conception of its alternative, this presentation will show, through an analysis of his published and unpublished writings, that Marx was committed to a specific concept of a post-capitalist society that informed his critique of value production, alienated labor and capitalist accumulation. Instead of focusing on the present with only a passing reference to the future, Marx’s emphasis on capitalism’s tendency towards dissolution is rooted in a specific conception of what should replace it. In critically re-examining that conception, this book addresses the quest for an alternative to capitalism that has taken on increased importance today.

In addition to MARX’S CONCEPT OF THE ALTERNATIVE TO CAPITALISM (Haymarket Books, 2013), PETER HUDIS is the General Editor of the COMPLETE WORKS OF ROSA LUXEMBURG and the co-editor of THE POWER OF NEGATIVITY: SELECTED WRITINGS ON THE DIALECTIC IN HEGEL AND MARX, by RAYA DUNAYEVSKAYA

Marx's Later Writings on the Paris Commune and the Alternative to Capitalism

Peter Hudis
MARX’S LATER WRITINGS ON THE PARIS COMMUNE AND THE ALTERNATIVE TO CAPITALISM

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 2014
6:00-8:00 PM
Westside Peace Center
3916 Sepulveda Blvd., near Venice Blvd. (free parking in rear)
Suite 101-102, press #22 at door to get into building
Culver City (LA area)

Speakers:
MICHAEL PUGLIESE, longtime left observer
HYUNHO C., student activist

In his CIVIL WAR IN FRANCE, Marx pointed to the concrete measures taken by the Paris Commune, including the abolition of the state, as harbingers of a new form of radical democracy, communism.  He discussed the nature of that communism and the way it could be achieved in CRITIQUE OF THE GOTHA PROGRAM, where it would culminate in a society based upon the principle of from each according to their abilities to each according to their needs.  This and other aspects of Marx's writings bearing on alternatives to capitalism will be the subject of free and open discussion.
